The latest phase of one of the most significant waterfront developments in Plymouth has reached an important milestone, marked by a topping out ceremony on site with the main contractor Pollard.

Leeward House, a six-storey building of 59 apartments, is the third phase in the redevelopment of Mount Wise. Previously a former Military Headquarters, this site has stunning panoramic views across Plymouth Sound, the River Tamar, City Centre and Dartmoor. The development is due for completion in the autumn.

We were delighted to host guests from the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), Plymouth City Council, Plymouth Sutton and Devonport MP, Oliver Colvile, Councillor Nicholson and the consultant team. Bill Badham, Managing Director of Pollard, and Emma Faraday of Mount Wise (Devon) Ltd performed the topping out by fixing into place the last glazing panel on the top floor thereby making the building watertight.

Commenting on the event, Bill Badham of Pollard said:

“The exact origins of topping out are unknown, but evidence suggests that the practice took place as far back as Roman Times and in ancient Egypt, often involving human sacrifice to ward off evil spirits! In ancient China the tradition was to place an evergreen tree upon the structure to symbolise growth and bring good luck.

Today’s topping out of Leeward House marks an important and exciting moment in this project. The team have worked extremely closely to achieve the progress we see today and we are delighted that so many are here to mark this event. We now focus our efforts on the completion of the project and handing over this stunning building to Mount Wise.”

In response, Emma Faraday, of Mount Wise (Devon) Ltd said:

“We are delighted to be celebrating this milestone moment with the Pollard team for this contemporary new building at Mount Wise. Leeward House brings a new era of apartment living in this sensational setting.

We have now launched the marketing of Leeward House and have already secured a number of pre-sales. The response from the market has been encouraging and our purchasers are looking forward to moving into their new homes in the Autumn.

We look forward to continuing working with Pollards in delivering this fantastic building and creating an enviable place to live for our purchasers.”

Jon Tuck of the HCA commented:

“We are delighted to be working with Mount Wise once again to deliver much needed high quality housing in Plymouth.

We have provided funding for Leeward House from the Home Building Fund, demonstrating our commitment to delivering new homes.”
